On August 1, 2026, Repatriate's Day was celebrated in the Republic of Adygea. The main events took place at Unity and Harmony Square in Maykop, where a folk crafts fair was held. Among those gathered at the Adyghe hearth were the first repatriates, their children, and even grandchildren, who were born and raised in Adygea.
Repatriate's Day in Adygea was established in memory of the events of 1998, when the first compatriots abroad—Circassians (Adyghe) from Yugoslavia, who had fled their homes due to the armed conflict in Kosovo—returned to their historical homeland.
During the official part, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Khizir Khotko congratulated those present on behalf of the head of Adygea. In his speech, he noted that those distant events have forever become part of Adygea's modern history.
In the following years, Circassians (Adyghe) returned to Adygea from Turkey, Syria, Jordan, and Israel. Today, more than two and a half thousand repatriates live in the republic. All of them actively contribute to the economic and cultural life of the region.
It should also be noted that Circassians have returned to all other regions of the Circassian homeland. More than 3,000 people have returned to the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic. Dozens of Circassians have returned to Karachay-Circassian Republic, and dozens of families have returned to the Shapsug region on the Black Sea coast.
