Aniuar Geduev - One of the most spectacular wrestlers of the 21st century

 




Aniuar Borisovich Geduev is a renowned Circassian freestyle wrestler who competed in the 74 kg weight class. He was born on January 26, 1987, in the village of Psygansu, Urvansky District, Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (Eastern part of the Circassian homeland), Russian Federation. He began wrestling at the age of 11.

He is a silver medalist at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, a three-time European champion, and a two-time Russian champion.

For his incredible strength, drive, and explosive technique, Geduev has earned recognition among fans as one of the most spectacular wrestlers of the 21st century.

The Olympic Drama in Rio (2016) The 2016 Olympic Games were the most dramatic moment in Aniuar's career:
Quarterfinals: Geduev caused a sensation by defeating the tournament's main favorite, the reigning Olympic and multiple world champion Jordan Burroughs, with a score of 3-2.

Semifinals: In a tough fight with Dzhabrail Gasanov, Aniuar suffered a deep cut to his eyebrow.

Finals: The Circassian wrestler entered the mat against Iranian Hassan Yazdani with his head almost completely bandaged. Due to the bandage, Geduev was unable to see clearly and was struggling for breath, and doctors repeatedly stopped the match to stop the bleeding. Leading 6-0, Aniuar, exhausted by injury, lost in the final seconds (score 6-6, Yazdani won by the last action). The fight went down in world sports history as an example of incredible courage and resilience.

Retirement:
After the Rio Olympics, Geduev planned to move up to a heavier weight class (up to 86 kg) due to a grueling weight cut. However, due to a series of injuries and a long layoff, he no longer competed in major international competitions. In the summer of 2020, the athlete officially announced his retirement.
