Adel Sharkas (Circassian) - Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan

 



Part of our website's work is to showcase Circassians who have achieved success in the fields of economics and business. Today we introduce you to Adel Sharkas (Circassian), a Circassian from Jordan who holds important positions in the economy of the Kingdom of Jordan.

Adel Sharkas is a Jordanian economist and politician of Circassian descent who serves as Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan since 2022. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Applied Statistics from Yarmouk University in 1988, a Master's degree in Economics from the same university in 1990, and a PhD in Financial Economics from the University of New Orleans in 2002. He has held the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan since January 10, 2022.

Adel Ahmad Sharkas was born in July 10, 1966. He began his career at the Central Bank of Jordan in 1991, serving as Head of the Monetary Affairs Department in 2008, then Director of the Research Department in 2011, before becoming Deputy Governor of the Central Bank in 2012. 
He has also lectured at the University of New Orleans, and has been an Associate Professor at the University of Jordan, the Hashemite University, the New York Institute of Technology, the Institute of Banking Studies, and an Assistant Professor at Alfred University in the United States. 

Adel Sharkas received the Harold McGraw Award in Finance for his research paper, "The Impact of Mergers and Acquisitions on the Efficiency of the US Banking Industry," at the Western Finance Association Conference in 2006, and the "Who's Who" Award for faculty members at US universities in 2005 and 2006.

Adel Sharkas held several positions, including:
Head of the Financial Services Sector Team and Member of the Coordinating Committee for Jordan Vision 2025.
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Jordan Mortgage Refinance Company.
Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Member of the Information Technology Steering Committee at the Central Bank of Jordan.
