Dygēgēzē (Sozresh) is one of the most ancient Circassian holidays, celebrated on December 22nd. This holiday is associated with the Winter Solstice, when the night is at its longest.
By the evening of December 22nd, a hawthorn tree trunk with seven branches (Khemkūtey Bash) is decorated in the courtyard. A wax candle is attached to each branch. The top of the trunk is decorated with a round smoked cheese (khūey plēyzh). /During a large celebration, seven torches are placed around the trunk/.
The candles are lit by the youngest married woman in the family. The woman must always face east. If there are no married women in the house, the youngest girl lights the candles. If only men are celebrating the holiday, the youngest one lights the candles.
After this, the hawthorn is brought into the house, where a family feast begins. The ritual drink for this night is Sanekhu (white wine). This night must be spent awake, surrounded by family or friends.
The holiday is celebrated not only within the family circle; it is also a widespread celebration throughout the street, village, and city.
The celebration is accompanied by dancing, in which Azhygafe takes part.
