The Impressive Success of Uzbekistan National Team Coach Rustam Assakalov

 




Uzbekistan National Greco-Roman Wrestling Team Coach Rustam Asakalov (Circassian) achieved great success with his team at the 2025 World Championships held in Zagreb, Croatia.

Three athletes from the Uzbekistan national team won three medals at the championships:

gold medal for Aitzhan Khalmakhanov (63 kg),

silver medal for Alisher Ganiev (60 kg), and

bronze medal for Abdullo Aliyev (72 kg).

Rustam Assakalov is the head coach of the Uzbekistan National Greco-Roman Wrestling Team, a position he has held since October 2024, following the end of his athletic career following the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Rustam Assakalov was born in 1984 in Novorossiysk, USSR. He competed for Russia until 2012, then moved to Uzbekistan. In 2013, he became the Asian Champion. In 2014, he won silver at the Asian Championships and the Asian Games. In 2015, he became the Asian Champion and silver at the World Championships. In 2016, he competed in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but only finished eighth. In 2017, he won bronze at the Asian Championships and also won bronze at the Islamic Solidarity Games. In 2018, he won silver at the Asian Championships and the Asian Games.

At the 2019 World Pre-Olympic Championships in Kazakhstan, Rustam won a bronze medal in the 87 kg weight class and earned an Olympic license for his National Olympic Committee. In 2020, he took part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo and in 2024 in Paris, where he finished 5th (97 kg).
